What Else But A Chivas Love Story?
By: Andrea | February 14th, 2009Alright, so sit back and relax. I’m here to tell you a story.
Often, soccer is called the Beautiful Game. For my family, that seems to be especially true.
When I was younger, I used to ask my mom why my immediate family liked Chivas so much. And thus, the story begins…
My parents met when my mom was 18 and my dad 22. They had never met each other, but eventually they started to see each other quite often despite living in the same area their whole lives. My dad was a soccer player, and my mom was a soccer fan. Every Sunday without fail she’d go support her local team, but nothing more than that. My dad was very concentrated during the games(or so he claims) and never had his eyes wander to the stands.
That was until one special day. You see, both my parents are Chivas fans. This is not a Romeo and Juliet story.
My mom arrived at one of the games with a Chivas shirt on. Perhaps not very exciting, but it set her apart to my dad. My mom has never been afraid to express her views so the outward showing of her team came before wearing the “stylish” clothes of the time.
My dad, seems to have been quite impressed by this. As they tell me, my dad was too shy to approach her that one time. A few games later he built up the courage to go talk to her, but he needed to find an excuse. Luckily for him, he scored a goal and he dedicated it to my mom.
My mom went home that day, intrigued by the man who had done that for her.
The next weekend they finally spoke.
My dad kept on hoping throughout the week that A) she didn’t have a boyfriend and B) that she really was a Chivas fan. Lucky him, both were true. That day he asked her out and she said yes.
Of course, the date had to be a Chivas game. Both of my parents lived near Guadalajara and it was the perfect place. After that, the date was set and the rest is history.
That was in 1985. So you can imagine what kind of hairstyles and crazy soccer uniforms people had back in that day.
Anyways, the next year was the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, and of course more dates at those games followed. The most memorable that summer? West Germany vs France.
Their love continued to flourish as Chivas won the 1986/87 season and they were there to witness it together.
In 1990, the finally made it official and got married. To think it all started with a Chivas jersey…
When Chivas won a championship 10 years later, they had to tow 2 kids along to the last game of the season.
Now, because of other commitments, my parents aren’t as free to travel as they like. When Chivas come over state-side, they take us to see the games while going on a mini-date themselves. Those memories surely come flooding back.
As they enter their 19th year of marriage, my parents seem as in love as what they looked like they were in their wedding pictures. Their love for Chivas remains the same and its their tradition to sit together and watch the game. Now, they have two kids that they’ve passed on the love for Chivas and we couldn’t be happier.
They’re not the same as they were all those years ago. My dad now sports a gut, and my mom is not as thin as she once was, but they both see each other through they eyes they did all those years ago.

OMG that is the best story! My parents met while drinking in a hotel bar in Australia. After the bar closed, the group they were with went back to my dad’s apartment and cleared out his booze cabinet. At the end of the night, my mom slipped him her phone number. …and the rest is mawaaige then me & my sister. Totally not as cool as your story by a long shot.

Fantastic read!
I wish my parents had a story this awesome. A food factory and a million Mexican food dates just aren’t that cool.

Melissa- That was gutsy of your mom! That’s a good story too. It’s always funny to hear about how parents met. Although, I think they try to hide some details.
Laurie- I thought so too when I heard it. I think I was about 6 and thought my dad was weird for being too scared to talk to her at first but now I’ve changed my mind about my dad.
Al- I’m sure your parents have an awesome story too! I’m pretty sure my mom would have wanted to go on food dates instead of eating a quick bite from stands outside the Jalisco. They don’t look that clean…
