QEPD/RIP Jaime Gómez MurguÃa
By: Edgardo | May 5th, 2008Earlier this morning, Club Deportivo Guadalajara suffered the loss of one of it’s legends, one of it’s icons, one of the Campeonisimo players, and the player mi tÃa Guillermina had an eternal crush on –
El Tubo.
Jaime “El Tubo” Gómez sadly passed at the age of 78 after losing a battle with pancreatic cancer.

This is one of his most famous images, where Tubo leans on one of his posts and begins reading during the Clasico Tapatio and the final of the Cope Occidente (Western Cup), “por falta de chamba” (lack of work), ridiculing the Atlas attack. He had a point, for the game ended 5-0.
There is another famous anecdote , in which Chivas were playing Oro for the title. Chivas needed only a tie not only for the title, but to take their fifth straight. Gómez crosses the field on a free kick and calls for Isidoro “El Chololo” DÃaz to cross it to him. Tubo jumps over the defense, connects a solid and well placed header, only to be saved by the Oro keeper, “PiolÃn” Mota. Although this time he was on the losing side, it became one of his most famous anecdotes, and the mere blemish in a span of 7 years in which Chivas won six titles (ironically enough, the Oro coach, Arpad Fekete, had coached Chivas to their second and third titles.)
Gómez played 15 seasons with Chivas, won 6 titles, and played nearly 300 games, including 123 consecutive games between 1949 and 1956. Jaime Gómez was one of Chivas’ most passionate players, and one of the players most closely related not only with the Campeonisimo, but the whole of Chivas’ history.
A true legend has died today.
