It’s Not Always Sunny in Cancun

Vilar and Chicharo HernandezHmmm….so. What to say about this game? First half, not so good. We were down 2-0 by the first 20 mins and I’ll admit, I was skeptical that we were going to come back after watching us play. It got bad enough that I had to whip out my lucky Chivas jersey.

Atlante
3 Federico Vilar
7 Fernando Navarro
2 Miguel A. Martínez
6 Gerardo Espinoza
4 Gerardo Venegas
15 Arturo Muñoz (Daniel Arreola 68′)
17 Daniel Guerrero
10 Gabriel Pereyra (Andrés Carevic 77′)
18 Christian Bermúdez
11 Luis Gabriel Rey (Giancarlo Maldonado 72′)
8 Rafael Márquez
DT José Gpe. Cruz

Guadalajara
1 Luis Michel
17 Sergio Amaury Ponce
19 Jonny Magallón
4 Héctor Reynoso
20 Édgar Mejía
11 Ramón Morales
7 Gonzalo Pineda
18 Xavier Báez (Marco Fabián 72′)
10 Alberto Medina (Jesús Padilla 68′)
14 Javier Hernández
9 Omar Arellano (Jared Borgetti 82′)
DT Omar Arellano Nuño.

Atlante got off to a quick start when they scored in the 4th minute. Michel’s clearance of the ball was not great and Rafael Marquez took advantage of that and scored. 1-0.

In the 19th minute they scored again. Atlante went 2-0 up when Martinez took a chance from outside the box. The ball quickly went into the corner of Michel’s goal and we were down some more.

Chivas had a few chances towards the closing minutes of the game. In the 44th minute Chicharo Hernandez earned a penalty. Vilar had taken too long in clearing the ball and Chicharo took advantage of that. When Vilar saw that he was loosing the ball he went in on Chicharo and took him down. Some Chivas were calling for a red card, but only a yellow was given. Morales stepped up and put it into the right corner to make it 2-1 going into the break.

The team definitely looked better in the second half. There were a few chances, but one of the most significant one came in the 70th. A corner kick resulted in the equalizer of the night. ‘Chicharo’ Hernandez rose up to get the ball and his header went off an Atlante man. Ponce also seemed to have touched it somewhat in the replays, but the score was still 2-2. I’m going to say it was Chicharo’s goal. Most players were celebrating with him and not Ponce.

The team is taking sometime to adjust to Arellano’s system. We don’t seem to attack as much under this new man, but maybe later this will bear more fruits. The important thing is that the team managed to come back after being 2-0 so early. Maybe next time we can win.

Also, Chicharo continues to impress me. He seems to win us matches and he did so again tonight. He’s a player that strives for every ball no matter what. His persistence payed when he earned that penalty. I really like him and I think he does better than Borgetti up front.

Ochoa is getting more worried with every passing day. The player is still with Tapatio A and doesn’t seem to be figuring in to the new manager’s plans. Good luck to him either way.

Our next game is against Lanus of Argentina in the Copa Libertadores on April 14th. Chivas tends to do well against Argentinean teams and we’ve pretty much got the pass out of the group stages.

bab- Haha yes it does. Was that the case yesterday? The field looked a little soaked.

Rafael- They will. They do well against Argentinean teams so I have complete faith that they will get through. I would’ve loved to have been in Cancun too, alas my spring break was a couple of weeks ago.
