To go on to the Liguilla Chivas needed to 1) win and 2) if San Luis drew they needed to win by 6+ difference.

Guess which one happened? Option number one. Queretaro won 4-0 against San Luis, giving Chivas the chance to move on. However, Chivas couldn’t score one goal against Cruz Azul.

The game started off with quick pace. Cruz Azul attacked first, but Chivas quickly responded with their own attacks. Neither were extremely significant but set the pace for what was to come.

For Chivas the attacks came in threes…a little like deaths. Nothing went in and that’s how it remained for the game.

Chivas did have a few significant opportunities including one by Bravo in the beginning of the second half. Bravo came up against Corona and could have taken a shot anywhere, but ended up giving the ball right to Corona.

Then in the 90th minute Villa stuck a fork(goal) in the back of the net and it was done. 1-0 and Chivas were out.

The truth is that Chivas didn’t really deserve to be in the Liguilla. Sure, play had improved but the season as a whole had been terrible. They had had all the previous opportunities to take over second place of an extremely bad group one and those were wasted.

So for the third consecutive short season, Chivas miss out on the Liguilla. The players are due back on November 30th for preseason training.

In the meantime time for a new manager. Although truth be told I wouldn’t mind if Real remained. His style is great and Chivas really turned around for the three games that he was in charge for. A preseason with the team would greatly help.

I was surprised that Chivas weren’t completely slaughtered. After the 1-1 draw the Chivas players looked content with a point. Alright, a point is a point but Chivas did not deserve that point.

Chivas didn’t have many opportunities and were lucky that more goals weren’t conceded.

Pumas had most of the opportunities, Chivas had about two.

They were horrible throughout the whole game and only slightly improved at moments only to go back to being bad.

In truth Pumas deserved to win. Their selfish players and horrible finishing prevented them from getting more goals.

Chivas have Luis Michel to thank for fantastic saves, and the post that prevented about 3 goals as well.

So in front Hernandez got the goal again. He was at the right place at the right time, but at least he keeps on scoring. Captain Omar Bravo was invisible during the first half and was taken off for the complementary part.

In the midfield poor little Ramon Morales worked his butt off. Again, he seems like the only player that truly feels for the team.

And the defense…the horror. Reynoso’s terrible attempt to clear the ball led to the Pumas goal. He made several other defensive errors but that was the worst. Galindo did better than the others only because he made a few good clearances and didn’t outshine because he didn’t make horrible mistakes. Solis made a huge save on the line and that was his best contribution, but he did play better than previous performances under Ramirez. And Johnny Magallon…he really is one of my favorite players on the squad, but his performance was terrible. He played as a left back and not as a central defender so that might have had a small factor but he looked lost. I think that all the games have caught up with him.

Four of the boys(Magallon, Araujo, Arellano, and Chicharo) will go off with the national team for the midweek friendly against Colombia.

Next up is Monterrey on October 3rd. Monterrey have been doing extremely well so far…who knows if Chivas will come out of that alive.

10 Danilo Verón
24 Oribe Peralta
DT Luis Fernando Tena

The quick highlights:

Raul Arias made his debut…and was sent off near the end of the first half for trying to get the stupid ref to let the medics on the field.

Sergio Amaury Ponce scored the lone goal on a wicked volley.

Johnny Magallon seems to be doing better up front than in the back.

Chivas kept a clean sheet.

So first…Chicharo collided with Gandolfi halfway through the first half. He seemed to feel the after effects of the clash and collapsed in the midfield. The Jaguares players were near him and quickly urged for medical help, but the referee refused the OPPOSITION team’s claims as well as those by new manager Arias and the players on the bench. Arias was sent off for trying to get help.

According to medical reports released by the club, Chicharo should be well and is recovering. He’s being kept under close observation at a hospital. Head injuries are of course taken very seriously especially since Carlos Sanchez from America had a brain hemorrhage after a similar clash in a game.

Alright so onto the game…You could definitely tell that there was a new style in the air. I didn’t like it. It was too boring. Lots of trying to counterattack and trying to defend. Although to be honest, the defending wasn’t going too well.

We knew that essentially that was Arias’ style, but really? That is not at all how Chivas is supposed to play.

And the defending…although a clean sheet was kept it was out of pure luck. Again, the defense was caught several times and the post saved Chivas too many times. That’s not good. Where’s the defense that’s supposed to be a part of the NATIONAL team? Where is that level? The back is all going through a though period. Everyone back there. Magallon, Galindo, Reynoso, Michel. Everyone.

Next up is Chivas USA in the midweek. Why Chivas are playing these idiotic friendlies is beyond me(although money is always the answer). What Chivas really need to to do is focus on the Mexican league and doing better there, not promoting the brand abroad.

Again, Chivas did not perform well although to be honest it wasn’t very surprising. Omar Arellano showed up and on his return scored the equalizer.

DT. José Luis Sánchez Solá.

Guadalajara
1 Luis Michel
6 Omar Esparza (Alberto Medina 2T)
2 Mario de Luna (YC48′)
4 Héctor Reynoso
20 Édgar Mejía (YC 53′)
16 Édgar Solís (Amaury Ponce 57′)
18 Xavier Báez
7 Gonzalo Pineda
5 Patricio Araujo (Omar Arellano 66′)
14 Javier Hernández
99 Omar Bravo
DT. Francisco Ramírez.

The game started out in favor for Puebla. They constantly attacked and were close to scoring the opening goal. Of course, it didn’t take long and in the 6th minute Alejandro Acosta scored the 1-0. Michel wasn’t able to hold on to the ball after an initial shot. Acosta was able to control the ball and give Puebla the lead.

It didn’t take too long before Chivas equalized. Game captain, Omar Bravo, received the rebound from an initial Gonzalo Pineda shot. Bravo shot with his left foot for the 1-1 score.

Michel made a fingertip save in the 19th minute on a shot from ‘Pescadito’ Ruiz.

Then in the 21st minute, Puebla got their second goal. Ruiz sent in a cross to Jared Borgetti who was on the far post. Marked by Mario de Luna, Borgetti easily rose to use one of his famous headers for the 2-1.

Back for the second half, Chivas gave away a penalty. De Luna held on to Borgetti’s jersey and pulled down the player. Borgetti himself stepped up to take the penalty. He shot the ball to Michel’s right, but the Chivas ‘keeper was able to save and keep the score at 2-1.

Puebla were almost able to put the game away when in the 87th minute Vigneri took a shot that ended up hitting the base of the right post, barely missing going into goal.

During the last minutes of the game ‘Chelis’ kept on kissing/praying to his small crucifix.

In added time Chivas received a free kick. Ponce was laid the ball by Pineda. It went into the box, and Villalpando was able to stop the initial ball. However, he was unable to hold on to it and both Mejia and De Luna struggled to try and put it in. It was Omar Arellano who showed up and put it in the back of the net for the 2-2 draw.

At the end, there was a mass brawl from both sides as tempers flared, but it didn’t escalate too much beyond control. Funny enough, these brawls have occurred on the “Fair Play” dates.

The game…

Defensively I think that there’s been a slight improvement over the past games. Yes, two goals were let in and there was a penalty, but they did ok. It was Puebla on the attack, but it was a slight improvement.

Up front there were a couple of missed opportunities, but that should get better. Omar Arellano improved and his impact was felt with the equalizer. Hopefully, he doesn’t get injured….AGAIN.

It’s bad to say that the team did decently, but that might just be being used to Chivas’ below average performances.

The next game is against San Luis on September 12.

Chivas started out with the control of the ball, and in the 10th minute there was an opportunity for Chicharo. He sent in a cross/shot but no one was at the end.

Then in the 19th Chivas scored. Chicharo had turned and hit the ball into the net, but in the end it was called offsides. It wasn’t an iffy call…it was legitimately offsides(3 Chivas players were) and the score remained 0-0.

Atlante kept on looking dangerous and in the 25th minute “The Hobbit” came close to scoring after a scramble in the box. Luckily, Luis Michel was able to hold on and keep the score level.

The best chance for Chivas in the first half came for Chivas in the 29th minute. Ramon Morales sent in a cross for Chicharo who tried a diving header, but his attempt ended wide of the goal.

But it was Atlante who went up first. In the 35th minute “El Hobbit” took the ball that Magallon failed to retain and quickly sent it over Michel who had come out of goal. With that Atlante went up 1-0.

Coming back for the second half Chivas had the first opportunity of the game. Chicharo was able to shake off the Atlante defenders and sent in a shot that just brushed the cross bar in the 47th minute.

It wasn’t too long after that Chivas got the equalizer. In the 51st minute Xavi Baez sent in a cross from the right and Chicharo was able to meet it to head in the 1-1.

Unfortunately for Chivas only five minutes later Atlante scored once more. Saul Garcia crossed from the right for Rafael Marquez Lugo who was able to go above Hector Reynoso and head in the ball for a 2-1 lead.

“Hobbit” scored his second of the night in the 70th minute with a pass from Peyrera. Chivas didn’t mark the tiny player and left him completely alone for Atlante’s 3-1 win.

As the game was ending Luis Michel came out to make a fantastic save against Daniel Arreola to stop another goal.

Oh defense…where were you today? Obviously not on the pitch that’s for sure. Johnny Magallon’s grandmother passed away so I understand if his head was perhaps somewhere else. Although he is a professional, he is also human and it would have been difficult to believe that there weren’t other things going through his mind. But, where were all the others? Aaron Galindo? Hector Reynoso? I’d like to know where you were for all those goals.

Unfortunately, Ramon Morales had to come out of the game with a hip injury. Our little captain is getting old and less and less playing time is expected. No reports yet on the extent of the injury.

The midfield was troubled today as well and they lost too many balls and failed to collect any. Everything passed through them with ease.

Up front Chicharo keeps on scoring, but he needs someone to help him. The addition of Omar Bravo is nice, but it hasn’t really worked out. Of course, he’s not at full fitness, but I don’t see them working together as well. OmaArellano will be close to fitness once more. But he needs help up there. Many times were chances wasted. No one to pass to, no on to receive.

So now we still have……..3 points. We’re in fourth place of group 2. At least we’re better than the defending champions…

The next game is against Pachuca at home on August 29th.

In other news, the transfer of “Gringo” Padilla to Chivas USA was made during the week. The reason? There are already enough strikers on Chivas.

And it wasn’t all bad against Atlante. The U-20s won 3-1 against Atlante while the U-17 won 5-1.

Chivas started off well with the first attack coming at the 7th minute of the game. ‘Chicharo’ received the ball, brought it down, but ended up sending it way offffffffffff into the stands. Gonzalez from Queretaro was at his back, and at first it looked like the referee had called a penalty, but he didn’t although he should have.

Anyways, it didn’t take long for Chivas to go up because in the 15th minute Chivas took the lead. Guess who? That’s right, Chicharo. Marco Fabian and Chicharo exchanged passes and then it was just left for Chicharo to push in past Bossio. 1-0

Queretaro had an opportunity in the 31st when Adrian Romero took a shot from really far out, but it went just wide.

Then in the 38th Super Captain Ramon Morales took one of his famous free kicks, but Bossio was able to get a last second hand on it.

Minutes later in the 42nd the opposition was reduced to 10 men when ‘Pirata’ Castro went in studs up on Xavi. A free kick was awarded. From there Ramoncito took it and sent it towards Reynoso who was at the far post. Reynoso then sent it to Chicharo who once more just had to push it in for a goal. 2-0

Medina came close in the 69th minute when he was able to draw out Bossio, and left behind the defenders. ‘Venado’ was having an off night and sent it right into the side netting.

Then it was Marco Fabian who had a shot. Omar Bravo(OMG NO WAYYYYYY YEAH HIM) chested down a pass to Fabian, but it was blocked and ended up going over goal in the 75th minute.

Chicharo almost had a hat trick when in the 82nd, but his shot went just wide of goal.

So that Chicharo kid, eh? Not too bad. His combination up top with Fabian is pretty good, and it’ll be interesting to see how it goes when Arellano comes back. That’ll be scary. He’s looking really good in these opening games and if he keeps on escalating…just imagine his performances in games to come. He has plenty of strength and he out-muscled the defenders to get his way.

There doesn’t seem to be a need to comment on the defense this time. Zero goal conceded. Today. So Chivas didn’t go up against the best oppoistion today, but they still did well. The back didn’t get much action this time around.

But…Chivas were a man up for most of the game. And they didn’t take advantage of that. Once there were 2 goals flashing on the board the team took a step back and just passed the ball around.

And of course…Omar Bravo made his debut. Again. For not playing as long as he has, he didn’t do too bad. I like Bravo, but personally I wasn’t too happy to see him back with the team. He’s a legend and all, but that wasn’t really jelling in my book. I don’t want him to get in the way of Chicharo and Arellano’s development. Anyways, he came across a few opportunities, although they weren’t very clear. The team was definitely trying to set him up, but no luck with a debut goal. He’s with Chivas. Ok. But the goal should happen naturally. Remember how long it took for him to score his 100th because there was so much pressure? It’s going to take time for him to find his form. It won’t be like he never left. He’s not coming back from injury. He’s coming back from a year away with a different team(s). But everyone clapped for him if that makes him feel any better.

Next game is against Atlante on the 21st.

This was horrible. So horrible that even “Kikin’ Fonseca scored. Do you know how many goals he scored last season? A grand total of 2. That means that he’s halfway to beating his total…by scoring on Chivas. I never thought I’d say it, but we definitely missed Reynoso in the back. And Aaron Galindo and Johnny Magallon are supposed to be considered starters for the Mexico game against the US on the 12th? And against Barca? Is anyone else worried?

Guadalajara
1 Luis Michel
17 Sergio Amaury Ponce
3 Aarón Galindo
19 Jonny Magallón (YC 6′)
25 Juan Ocampo (Julio Nava 68′)
11 Ramón Morales
7 Gonzalo Pineda
16 Édgar Solís (Marco Fabián 44′)
18 Xavier Báez
14 Javier Hernández
10 Alberto Medina
DT Francisco Ramírez

Tigres
1 Cirilo Saucedo
3 José Antonio Castro (YC 48′)
19 Fernando Ortiz
5 Alfredo González
4 Antonio Molina
15 Édgar Castillo
8 Lucas Ayala
17 José Toledo (YC 19′)
26 Francisco Fonseca
11 Itamar Batista
16 Lucas Lobos (Armando Pulido 82′)
DT Daniel Guzmán

Tigres didn’t wait very long to start their game. In the 5th minute Kikin received a nice pass from Itamar Batista(who was a beast during this game), and he feinted and went up against Michel to put it past him for the 1-0 lead.

Between the 13th and 14th minute Chivas had so many chances to score. Chicharo was at the forefront of the attacks, but the ball kept on alluding him in front of the net and it stayed the same.

Itamar scored the second of the night in the 35th minute. The Brazilian received a pass from Fonseca who had drawn most defenders to himself, and he chipped it over poor Michel. 2-0.

In the second half, Tigres once more had a chance in the 47th, but Lobos headed just wide.

Finally, in the 50th min Chivas scored. ‘Chicharo’ headed the ball into the net after receiving the pass from Medina and cut the Tigres’ lead in half to 2-1.

Tigres wasn’t done, and in the 61st min Itamar scored his second after outpacing Aaron Galindo. Score, 3-1.

And there’s been more disciplinary problems already. We’ll be without Amaury Ponce against Queretaro on August 15th for a red card.

Overall, a very disappointing game. If it had been lost like last weekend’s at Toluca, I would be more understanding. We came back and fought until the last second in that game. We lost, but there was that fighting spirit in the players that gave hope. Today, the team fell apart. It was horrible to watch from beginning to end. Where was the defense? Where was the leadership?

I dunno, but I’m not liking the look of Ramirez at the head of the team.

Everyone stood around, and just let it happen.

There’s also something going on with poor ‘Tepa’ Solis. That’s another game where he’s subbed out early. Another time where mistakes that should have been meaningless cost us dearly.

The only semi-bright spot in this game was Chicharo. He could have scored another, but at least he’s scoring.

But that’s still 2 losses. It’s the start of the season, but we’ve started with 2 losses. Tigres hadn’t won at the Jalisco since the Apertura 2003, and they broke that today.

Up next…Barcelona. They really need no introduction. This game will be played on August 8th in San Francisco. We were originally supposed to play <del datetime="00">Tecos</del>Estudiantes, but that will be moved to October 10th instead.

That’s two in a row if you haven’t been counting, and with the Libertadores taken out of our hands the season is over. Finished. To qualify we needed to win. Period. Indios had a tougher challenge and needed to win by a 2+ goal differential. Anything else would see America through.

We were in it for quite a while, until Indios(can you believe that they were just fighting relegation not too long ago) decided to get going and beat us 3-1. The only positive part is that at least America is out too.

Indios
25 Sidney Balderas
26 Juan Ramón Curbelo (YC 30′)
DT Héctor Hugo Eugui

Guadalajara

1 Luis Michel
19 Jonny Magallón (Patricio Araujo 62′)
3 Aarón Galindo
6 Omar Esparza
33 Mario de Luna (YC 24′)
16 Édgar Solís
18 Xavier Báez (YC 71′)
11 Ramón Morales (Omar Arellano 65′)
7 Gonzalo PIneda
10 Alberto Medina
14 Javier Hernández (Carlos Ochoa 60′)
DT Francisco Ramírez

The game didn’t start out too well, and there were several instances where the defense had a little trouble controlling Indios. Michel did manage to make a few saves to stop the early goal, but that’s about it.

Morales had a good chance in the 38th minute when he hit a volley with his left foot. The Indios keeper saved and kept the score at 0-0.

After a dull first half it was until the very end that Chivas managed to score. In the 45th, Medina took a ball crossed in by Chicharo and slotted it into the net. The ball had originally been wasted by the Indios defense who mishandled it, and were left standing as they watched it go in.

Coming back for the second half Indios didn’t waste any time to show what was to come. In the 57th Frias sent a shot that rattled the crossbar. It only took 10 minutes when Frias once again spearheaded the attack. He took advantage of the fact that Michel was on the edge of the box and coolly chipped the ball over Michel to make it 1-1. With a 1-1 draw America was going through.

The game got more exciting in the last 5 minutes. Unfortunately, it meant doom for us.

In the 87th minute Gimenez went on to score. Michel had been out during the cross, and was unable to get to the ball in time. With the 2-1 score America was still getting through, and although more goals were needed for either team to advance, Gimenez took the time to celebrate.

When it seemed like the game was ending, Indios scored once again to go through. In the 91st minute Gimenez scored once more to make it 3-1.

Ummm…so yeah. It’s over. I thought it was pretty simple to get through, but apparently the team didn’t want it bad enough.

It’s not that the players played bad, it’s just that Indios played better.

Football fans can be real hypocritical at times though. I know I certainly can be. When Indios went up 2-1 with so little time left I wanted Chivas to quit trying just so America wouldn’t go through either.

Now I’m anxious to see if Ramirez gets fired. His record is worse than Arellano’s.

Don’t worry though. The coverage isn’t over. Season end awards will be here.

This comes after the news that the 17th and final round of the Mexican tournament will be open to the public, but with stadiums only half full.

The game got off to a slow start. It wasn’t until the 28th that Ponce had a chance, but he blew his chance and sent it into the stands.

Puebla had the best luck of the night as they hit the post for the first time in the 31st minute as Perez had made his way through the defense.

In the 37th it was Puebla once more as Gonzalez managed to get rid of the Chivas defense and came up against Michel. Michel kept his cool and blocked the shot that would have made it 1-0.

After all those minutes it wasn’t until the 40th that Chivas had a good chance once more. Chicharo sent a shot in for Medina who almost had it, but Puebla’s Mendoza got a foot on the ball and sent it to hit the post.

Coming back for the second half in the 49th Arellano came close. Acosta managed to help out his keeper, but almost gave away and own goal.

Puebla had another good opportunity in the 61st when the team took advantage of having Michel off his line. The ball went in behind him and hit the crossbar, but didn’t go over the line.

Ponce came close in the 63rd from a freekick, but Villalpando who was excellent all afternoon, managed to save.

Seconds later a Puebla player went down and the ball was kicked out of play. Puebla expected the ball to be played back according to fair play, but Ponce took advantage of the situation and instead sent into a cross that caught Puebla off guard. Davino went up to Ponce and the players had a few chest bumps. Both were sent off as ‘Chicidracula’ was having no nonsense.

Chivas came close again in the 91st with Padilla, but Villalpando managed to deny Chivas a goal, and the game ended 0-0.

A boring game over all. I honestly expected Chivas to come out and do more in response to all the crap that’s been going on with the Copa Libertadores. Guess not.

The next game is against Indios on May 10th where we’ll look to qualify for the Liguilla.
